As definition, culture is a huge achievement that has been solidified into practice, art, and social institutions of a particular country, people, or other social groups. Further, a participatory culture is a culture that not only progressively participates in the communities grouped through the network, but also creates, shares, and receives feedback from them.

Participatory culture is a culture in which the barriers to expression and participation among Internet users are relatively low, strong support for creating and sharing creations, and some kind of informal mentoring, known as the most experienced, are delivered to beginners.

Participatory culture is also a culture in which members believe their contributions are important and feel some social connection to each other (Jenkins, Puroshotma, Clinton, Weigel, & Robison, 2009).

As everyone knows, participation in social media is increasing amid the implementation of policies such as “social distancing” and “staying at home” caused by COVID-19 pandemics. As a result, most of us have faced the situation of taking classes at home or not having a business trip, which means that our home becomes a workplace. In a way, the fact that a house has become a workplace is a convenient and great advantage for busy modern people. However, now there is no feedback if you do not participate.

Let me give you an example of a very simple participatory culture of what I’m using now. If you have any questions while taking the class with Zoom, you can ask them anytime and get feedback right away. They use Discord to broadcast games or YouTube to do individual eating shows or reviews. Vlog is a good example of a culture of participation in social media and is the most accessible digital blog on YouTube. Vlog refers to a video blog or video log, or a type of blog in which most or all of its content is in video format. In particular, Vlog posts consist mainly of creating your own videos when you talk about specific topics, such as product reviews or event reporting or reviews.

There are some prerequisites for the participation culture in social media that we should consider. It is the term digital literacy and the ability talent that we gain from our acquired efforts. In 1997, Paul Gilster, a historian and educator first coined the term “digital literacy,” arguing that digital literacy went beyond just skills in using technology.” (Brown, 2021). In order to be fully literate and engaged 21st century citizens, information literacy, media literacy, computer literacy, and digital literacy are requiring today. All the information I want to find is on the Internet. Importantly, the point of digital literacy is where and how we utilize any information through which medium. To be more specific, you need to know how to use a computer, how to search, where the information is located, and how to evaluate and utilize the information. Learning how to use a computer is fundamental, and new information and media will be updated every day and we use it. We live in an era where information, media, computer, and digital literacy are indispensable part of our lives.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIGITAL LITERACY IN THE CURRENT TIMES

These participatory cultures in the community have a variety of connections, active and initiative attitude development, and a net function of a sense of isolation. However, this great culture of participation also has an adverse effect on making humans tired. Digital literacy will continue to shape humans, and digital blindness will also be treated as outdated. The only concern is that the world will continue to be digitized and this digital literacy will become more important than linguistic literacy. There is a digital classroom on now the Internet, and through it, we are taking classes and interacting. Everyone knows that non-face-to-face digitization will continue, as learned through the Corona era. Now you can watch YouTube from babies to old people on their phone. Further, to keep up with the times, we all need to have digital literacy right now. 74% of adults in the U.S. use YouTube. That’s more than Facebook (which reaches 68% of American adults). And it’s almost twice as much as the next runner-up, Instagram (40%).
